CINEMATOGRAPHY WITH DAVID SCOTT

Screening of Mar Piccolo- Little Sea (Dir: Alessandro Di Robilant. 2009 93 mins) LFS alumnus and visiting lecturer David Scott has shot eight feature films by fellow LFS graduate Italian director Alessandro Di Robilant. This is a sneak preview of their latest film collaboration.

"features a wired performance by newcomer Giulio Beranek, who plays a working-class teen in a soulless section of the southern Italian city of Taranto, hemmed in by gangsters and a lack of opportunities. Di Robilant accurately captures the milieu as a cul-de-sac of hopelessness" Variety

Tuesday 11th May 5.30pm
STORY DESIGN IN THE SHORT FICTION FILM WITH RICHARD RASKIN

We welcome back to LFS the acclaimed teacher/author/filmmaker Richard Raskin, currently Associate professor at Aarhus University Denmark. Monday 24 May 5.30pm
PRODUCING WITH IAIN SMITH

Screening of Children of Men (Dir: Alfonso Cuaron, 109 mins 2006) followed by Q&A with producer and LFS alumnus Iain Smith (The Fountain, Cold Mountain, The Fifth Element, The Killing Fields) Starring Clive Owen, Michael Caine, Julianne Moore, Danny Huston (an LFS alumnus)

"Made with palpable energy, intensity and excitement, it compellingly creates a world gone mad that is uncomfortably close to the one we live in. It is a "Blade Runner" for the 21st century, a worthy successor to that epic of dystopian decay" Los Angeles Times

"Working with his longtime cinematographer Emmanuel "Chivo" Lubezki, Cuaron creates the most deeply imagined and fully realized world to be seen on screen this year, not to mention bravura sequences that bring to mind names like Orson Welles and Stanley Kubrick" Washington Post

Wednesday 26th May 5.30pm
Cinematography with Barry Ackroyd

Screening of The Hurt Locker (Dir: Kathryn Bigelow, 131 mins, 2008) followed by Q&A with cinematographer Barry Ackroyd (Green Zone, Looking for Eric, The Wind That Shakes the Barley), regular collaborator with Ken Loach and Paul Greengrass.

Barry Ackroyd won 2010 BAFTA Award for Cinematography and was nominated for an Academy Award.

"A first-rate action thriller, a vivid evocation of urban warfare in Iraq, a penetrating study of heroism and a showcase for austere technique, terse writing and a trio of brilliant performances. Most of all, though, it’s an instant classic that demonstrates, in a brutally hot and dusty laboratory setting, how the drug of war hooks its victims and why they can’t kick the habit". Wall Street Journal

Thursday 3rd June 6pm - Sound with Ray Beckett

Ray Beckett, regular collaborator with Ken Loach and Oscar-winning sound mixer on The Hurt Locker, discusses his work with Larry Sider from The School of Sound, illustrated by film clips, including The Hurt Locker, Land and Freedom and The Wind That Shakes The Barley.

Directing with Corneliu Porumboiu

Screening of 12:08 East of Bucharest, (86 mins, 2006) followed by Q&A with Corneliu Porumboiu Winner of the Cannes Camera d'Or (for best first film)

The film is set in the city of Vaslui, and centers on a group of characters who revisit the Romanian Revolution of 1989 which brought an end to the communist regime. The title refers to the time of day at which Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu fled following the revolution, 12:08 pm on December 22, 1989.

Corneliu's current film: Police, Adjective is screening on the 2nd July at Curzon Mayfair as part of the Romanian Film Festival 2-4 July.

Thanks to Romanian Cultural Centre, the Ratiu Foundation and Artificial Eye

One of the best of the new wave of Romanian cinema... a droll delight... a slyly comic and disarmingly self-mocking tone. Beautifully composed… a masterpiece of carefully orchestrated chaos... Beautifully observed and very funny... a real treat." Wendy Ide, THE TIMES
