Writers' Gym II with Ellis Freeman

9th September 2008 (one evening a week)

Tuesday Evening 6:30pm - 8:45pm

Advanced Level 8 week Part time course

Introduction

"I applied because I wanted to be inspired, to think more creatively about my approaches to screenwriting and to improve my knowledge. The Writers' Gym ticked all the boxes for me. It surpassed my expectations! Ellis is a fantastic teacher." Christie Walker, Writers' Gym participant June 2008.

From Treatment to Script

The Writers' Gym uses games and practical exercises to stimulate creativity in screenwriting. While structure and analysis are well covered in courses and books, less attention is paid to the creative side to screenwriting. The Writers Gym corrects this imbalance.

In this course, the emphasis is on being playful, finding your voice as a writer and developing your writing process as you work on your screenplay.

Building on the techniques of the Writers' Gym - 1, this eight week course focuses on the development of a single feature project for each participant.

Writers will be encouraged to use their creativity at all points in the development process to keep their work fresh, lively and original. During the course, the participants will get stuck into writing a first draft of their project.

There will be class exercises but we will also track the progress of the individual's projects, troubleshooting and offering practical guidance.

Each writer will be assigned the role of script editor of another project on the course and produce notes for the writer to work with. Giving good script notes is an essential part of being a professional writer and can also help you understand your own work.

The group will be no more than 8 writers to allow time for sufficient feedback and space to each writer and their projects. There will be some reading and also home assignments to keep the projects on track.

APPLICATION

Writers will be required to submit a one page description of the project they would like to develop on the course. You don't have to have the whole plot - just the general idea, key characters and storyworld.

Applicants also need to present a short personal statement of what they hope to achieve on the course.

Screenplays or treatments generated or started on this course will be read and given feedback by the tutor. (No more than one per person).

Priority will be given to writers who have previously been on the Writers Gym I. Participants who have not been on the Writers Gym I will also need to include a CV.

Fee- £380.00
