Speaker Profiles:
LARRY SIDER is Director of the School of Sound and from 2002-2006 was Head of Post-Production at the National Film and Television School (UK). He is a film editor and sound designer who has worked in documentary, animation and fiction. Most recently, he was Supervising Sound Editor for the Quay Brothers' The Piano Tuner of Earthquakes and Dave McKean's Mirrormask. Past projects include Patrick Keiller's London and Robinson in Space, Chris Austin's musical biography of jazz pianist Abdullah Ibrahim, The Brother With Perfect Timing, and Street of Crocodiles and Institute Benjamenta by the Quays. He has taught at numerous schools including the Royal College of Art, International Film School (Köln), European Film College (Ebeltoft), California Institute of the Arts, the Maurits Binger Institute and Bournemouth Media School. He is co-editor of Soundscape: The School of Sound Lectures 1998-2001 and The New Soundtrack Journal.
ANNABELLE PANGBORN studied singing and composition at the London College of Music and continued to train as an opera singer with English National Opera. Her work in experimental music led to her first film commission and her score for Simon Pummell’s award winning animation Secret Joy of Falling Angels (Channel 4). Secret Joy of Falling Angels was widely screened throughout the UK as part of a programme of fine art animations which demonstrated innovative and inspirational use of music and sound with moving image. Pursuing her work in film Annabelle went on to graduate from the Royal College of Art with an MA in Film and Television Direction.
Annabelle has a strong background in experimental film and has also established a significant body of work in narrative film. She has created sound tracks for award winning dramas, dance on film, animation and documentary both for broadcast TV and cinema. Credits include The Truth, George Milton’s critically acclaimed British feature film, The Death of Klinghoffer, Penny Woolcock’s award winning experimental feature film of the opera by John Adams, and Pleasureland, Channel 4’s confrontational feature length drama on teenage sex directed by Brian Percival. She has also worked with award winning directors Beeban Kidron, Sarah Turner, Alison Murray, John Henderson, Ben Hopkins, John Dower and Sara Sugarman.
She has been awarded the Fuji Zonal Scholarship Award for her sound track for Ben Hopkins' film, The Holy Time, and the Kodak Short Film Award for her collaborative short film, Stung.
Annabelle has an international reputation as a speaker and lecturer on her own professional practice and the relationship of sound, music and moving image as temporal media. As a professional composer and sound designer she has been invited to tutor and consult extensively throughout the UK, Europe, Latin America and Asia. She is currently Head of Editing, Sound and Music at the National Film and Television School, UK.
STEPHEN DEUTSCH has had his concert music performed by eminent artists, including the Medici Quartet, David Campbell, The Gaudier Ensemble, Andrew Ball, The London Mozart Players and many others. He has composed over thirty scores for film, theatre, radio & television. His many collaborations with the playwright Peter Barnes include the Olivier Award-winning play, Red Noses (1985) and the feature film Hard Times (1994). Formerly he was Professor of Post Production at Bournemouth University. In 1992 he founded the University's MA in Music Design for the Moving Image and in October 1997 he started the MA in Sound Design for the Moving Image and in 2005 added Editing to create a Post-Production course. From 2002-2006, he led the Composing for Film and Television MA course at the National Film and Television School (UK). He is the Editor of The New Soundtrack Journal published by Intellect Books.
