Turnaround: Independent Film Markets from Conception to Delivery

Start Date: January 2009 - New dates to be confirmed. Please register your interest with Carolyn Atherton: c.atherton@lfs.org.uk

Introduction

This workshop is a module of the Fast Forward Programme.
Fast Forward is a career focused programme for industry professionals looking to develop their skills to the next level. Click here for more details.

TURNAROUND is a one-week intensive workshop introducing the market structures of independent feature film development, packaging, finance, delivery, festivals, sales and distribution using a gaming model in which groups of three participants form film companies take their projects through all these stages via staged virtual ‘meetings’ covering the various stages of realising virtual productions.

We aim to answer such simple-sounding questions as:

  • Who funds films and why?
  • If most films lose money, how does the film industry survive economically?
  • What became of the old studio system, and which are the key alliances that make an independent film financeable?
  • What is bankability and how do I measure it?
  • Do I prefer to sell rights or equity and can I choose?

Participants should leave the course with a profound curiosity about changing markets, enough to make them lifelong readers of the film trade press, and a self-confidence about their understanding of all the stages in the value chain of film making and exploitation.

Using the team based participatory workshop system, participants are active throughout the week, and successfully use key terms and concepts in order to gain status in a competition which ends with the virtual films being selected for and marketed in a major festival.

This workshop is aimed at production grades with a good working knowledge of physical production jobs, but a poor grasp of the economic structure of the independent production system and the global markets it depends upon, from development to packaging, financing through delivery to sales and distribution.

Fee- £250.00 (all fees include a Skillset subsidy, therefore this course is not eligible for individual Skillset bursaries)
