London Film School, offer full-time MA Degree courses in both Film Making and Screewriting.

When we look at film, each image on the screen has tone, contrast, perspective, colour and texture – as well as the source of light. The purpose of visuals is to provide the director and production team with sketches, which convey these aspects and which enhance the ‘subject matter’. They also communicate to the production clear ‘visual ideas’ of the overall feel, colour and tone of the piece. Visuals provide information for set-decorators, costume and props; an integral part of the process. The design process can often sets the tone of the piece and gives the production/director ideas to work with.

This is a 2-day practical course aimed at those who want to develop their drawing skills. It will also benefit anyone who might be considering a career in the art department within the film and television industry.

Course Outline

One of the core skills required in any Art Department in film and television is technical drafting – its methodology and practice.

Day 1 [10am - 4pm]

• Introduction and use of materials
• Some basic drawing and colour wash exercises
• Look at cross - selection of production designers visuals and consider the techniques employed
• Practical: Breaking down a visual into component parts [3 exercises]
• Practical: Setting up some simple perspectives and considering the various options

Day 2 [10am - 4pm]

• Review the previous days work
• Practical: Setting up an axonometric drawing and the use of ‘birdseye’ visuals A brief look at Lens projection
• Practical: Replicating a visual and considering what are the key processes involved
• Practical:Developing your own visuals from sketch models/plan – supplied
• Summary of the days work plus handouts and recommended reading list

NB The two sessions may vary between Day 1 and Day 2

Fee- £250 including materials and documentation.
