Lighting for Drama on digital format (HD)

A two week practical cinematography workshop with Nina Kellgren BSC

New dates to be confirmed. Please register your interest with Carolyn Atherton: workshops@lfs.org.uk

Introduction

Award winning DP Nina Kellgren BSC leads a two week intensive workshop offering the chance to participate in planning, lighting and shooting a drama sequence on HD.

Inspired by a selection of classical paintings from the National Gallery the participants will work with 5 shooting briefs emulating, in HD, the dramatic sensibilities of light, shadow and composition of each painting. The outcome will be 5 short sequences, each with a different ‘look’ suitable for a different story.

The course includes an introduction to the Sony 750 HDCam or similar, a discussion on the aesthetics of lighting for HD and practical demonstrations of lighting a studio set, both for day and night, with a number of sequences being shot.

This course is a collaborative learning opportunity open to those who require either initial or further familiarization with the process of lighting and shooting drama on HD. In order to take part you need to be currently working in the Camera Department with a minimum of 2 years experience in the film/TV industry. This course is open to all grades of the camera department.

All participants must be familiar with principles of lighting and have experience working on a dolly such as the Fisher 9. All participants will share and rotate the key roles of DP, Operator and Director and subsidiary roles including Assistant, Grip and Gaffer/Spark.

Please note that this course will be based exclusively on the issues surrounding lighting and shooting drama on HD and does not include editing and grading. All participants will receive DVCam copies of the material shot during the workshop.
