Introduction

Rapid advances in technology within the industry can sometimes leave a gap between what the profession requires and what the training establishments deliver. This gap is apparent in the green screen & CGI environment, where both Ewan McGregor and Gwyneth Paltrow have openly admitted to finding it ‘very, very hard’ and ‘daunting’ when working in this medium.

This new workshop gives directors and VFX supervisors a step-by-step process which to use when working with actors in a green screen environment and with CGI’s. The actors’ performances will be freely imaginative whilst maintaining the high degree of technical precision this medium requires. At the centre of the workshop lies a fundamental understanding of the imagination and how to use it.

Areas covered include:

  • Understanding what demands are placed on actors when performing in this medium (ie technical skill + characterisation, emotional content, vocals and visualisation).
  • How to best prepare an actor physically and mentally in preparation for filming against green screen.
  • How to create specific and vivid 3D imaginary props, characters and landscapes.
  • Scaling up pictures taken from artists’sketches, CG images or miniatures and project them into 3D space.
  • Knowing how to help actors create these 3D pictures in a step-by-step imaginary process.
  • Showing actors how to ‘overlay’ pictures and therefore authenticate props, stand-ins, prosthetics…
  • Guiding actors within an action sequence whilst maintaining a quality performance and stable 3D visualisations.

The workshop is structured as below:

  • Relaxation
  • Warming up the senses
  • Creative imagination and visualization – a step-by-step process to produce 3D visualisations
  • Applying the technique
  • Wind down and recap with questions

Afterwards your actors will no longer pretend to see monsters and act scared, they will see the monsters and be scared.

This is an intensive one day workshop where you will be required to participate in exercises.
