MA Film Making

Editing

Editing takes the dearly bought raw materials of moving picture and sound, cutting, shaping and polishing them into imaginative objects of desire.

Film editing at LFS.

As an editor you will watch, select and cut the audio visual material shot for a film. As an editor you will arrange your selections in a rhythmical succession of scenes, to convey a desired message to an audience.

We aim to give every student on the MA Filmmaking programme an understanding of the value of the craft and of the importance of communicating with the other departments and technicians involved during the production process, in order to provide the best material for the cutting room or edit suite.

Through lectures and practical experience we offer all students a solid grounding in the various techniques and technologies of film and video editing. More advanced experience and instruction is available for those who see editing as their intended field of professional work. We start with cutting 16mm black and white silent movies to teach students the basic principles and 'rules' of joining one shot to another, a series of shots into a sequence and a number of sequences into a visual narrative. In Term Two we encourage students in the creative use of sound when they add non-synchronised music, dialogue and effects to their short S16mm colour films.

Term Three introduces students to synchronised sound providing new challenges in structuring picture and sound in order to communicate more effectively with your audience. Term Four brings drama editing on Avid Film Composer with a mono sound mix; and Term Five extends this with non-linear post-production on both Avid Film Composer and ProTools for Sound Design.
